There’s nothing better than a shiny boat.
But washing and waxing takes time and quite frankly, most boat owners would prefer to be out on the water rather than at the dock for hours on regular cleaning, buffing, and polishing (yourself included).
If you’re skipping this vital step because you don’t want to take the time to work on it, you’re making a critical mistake: Assuming that washing and waxing has to do with appearance alone.
Sure, washing and waxing make your boat look shiny and brand new again. But beyond this, properly cleaning your boat has a lot to do with strengthening your boat’s exterior surface (whether it’s made of fiberglass or is painted) and extending the lifespan of your precious purchase.
Regular washing and waxing can revive your boat’s glossy finish and create a factory-like appearance once again. But beyond appearance, proper maintenance has a serious impact on both fiberglass and painted boats.
For fiberglass boats, washing and waxing replenishes oils in the gelcoat (i.e. resin) that protects the surface of the boat. This eliminates some of the damage done by the sun and marine water that can erode your boat’s soft surface, damaging the structure over time in the process.
Painted boats also benefit from regular detailing services. Painted boats contain emollients and oils that make it shine while reinforcing the structure of the boat. By applying wax, you can protect the surface of your painted boat to remove dead paint and restore emollients for structural integrity.
Before you begin any major detailing project, washing is a must. After all, you need to remove the old wax, dirt, water minerals, grease, and other substances that can easily accumulate on your boat (and subsequently compromise its functionality).
This can take time (and doesn’t necessarily need to be done after every cruise) but should be done regularly to ensure you aren’t compromising functionality or the structure of your boat.
While it might seem like you’re adding a layer while waxing, you’re not. In fact, you’re removing the pitted surface that builds up due to sun and marine water damage.
In fact, polish works as an abrasive and by rubbing it over the entire boat surface, you’ll remove imperfections, scrapes, and discoloration that advances over time. As such, polishing not only strengthens the structural integrity of your boat, but leaves it looking great as well (while preventing against common issues like rust).
Without wax, the sun’s UV rays can quickly ruin the topsides of your boat. But with a layer of wax, you can increase durability, protect the gelcoat (if you own a fiberglass boat), and prevent oxidation that commonly robs your boat of its glossy, “brand new” appearance.
