Boat Terminology

Boat Terminology 101

Some might say that boat terminology is fancy language you don’t really need to know but in all actuality, you do.

After all, being able to distinguish port from starboard and the bow from the stern are important distinctions that can make a difference in critical situations.

If you’ve never quite taken your boating terminology seriously, it’s never too late to learn! And below, we’ve compiled 11 of the most important (and basic) terms that any yacht owner should understand.

11 Terms Every Yacht Owner Should Know

Ready to learn some of the terms you should know? Let’s get started!

Port is the left hand side of or left direction from the front of a vessel.

Starboard refers to the right hand side or right direction from the front of a vessel.

Aft means towards the stem (or back) of the boat.

The bow is the front of the hull, or the point that is most forward when the vessel is moving forward. This is often the point you can see coming forward from the front of the ship.

A boat’s stern is the back-most (or aft-most) part of the ship. The stern lies opposite the bow.

The engine room is the space on a ship where the engine is located.

On larger boats, the social area is referred to as a saloon. Many yachts come equipped with this space.

Generally where the owners/priority-guest of the vessels reside.

The crew quarters is the location where crew members (or for recreational purposes, your family members and friends) sleep on a boat.

The helm station is the area from which you control the boat. It’s typically crafted to have the technology and design necessary to keep you in full control of your boat and all its systems and components.

A swim platform is the platform at the waterline that gives swimmers easy access to get back on the boat.
